Dot NAME Domain Names

Started in 2001, the .NAME universal extension is the sole TLD supposed to be for personal websites only. These domains can consist of personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other labels people are popular by. At first, only 3rd-level registrations were possible, so if you planned to acquire john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already purchased 3rd-level domain names remained operational.

There are no specific terms on who can buy a dot NAME domain, but in order to maintain the goal behind its establishment alive, the Registry organization may check who the Registrant is and if there is no relation between the owner and the actual domain name, the registration could be challenged.
