This makes the RAM noticeably quicker than other types of storage devices including DVDs or HDDs where all of the info needs to be read so as to access certain data. When you have a shared hosting account, the amount of memory your web programs can use may not be fixed and may regularly be determined by the free memory which is available on the physical hosting server. Using a standalone server, however, there is always a minimum amount of physical memory which shall be for your use at all times and will not be allocated to other clients even when it is not being used.
