Password Protected Directories
See how to set up a secure and user-only area in your site with password-protected directories.
A password-protected directory or area is a folder that could be accessed when a username and a password are provided, so no unauthorized people may see its content. This function can be used for the main folder of a given website or just for a particular subfolder based on your requirements. For example, if you are developing a new Internet site and you don't want people to see it before it's ready, you may want to limit the access to it altogether, whereas if you need only some people to be able to access certain files, you may password-protect only a particular folder, while the remainder of the website can be seen by anybody. In either case, a “403 Forbidden” error page will appear if the login details the visitor enters aren't accurate. Even a direct link to a file won't work provided any folder above it is password-protected.

Password Protected Directories in Hosting
Creating a password-protected area will take merely a couple of clicks and a few seconds if you host your websites inside a
hosting account with us. You won't need to do anything challenging - you'll have to select a domain/subdomain, to select which folder under it has to be protected, and then to type in the login name and password which will be used to access that folder. When a number of people need their own login credentials, there will not be a problem to set up a variety of different usernames with access to the exact same folder. All secured folders will appear with a padlock icon in the File Manager section, so you'll always know where this function is activated. If you want to turn off the security function for any folder, you can disable it from the very same section of the Control Panel where you have enabled it.

Password Protected Directories in Semi-dedicated Hosting
You'll be able to create password protection for any content that you have within your
semi-dedicated server account. We've added an easy-to-use tool to the Hepsia website hosting Control Panel via which you will be able to switch on the function with a few mouse clicks and with no complications, even if you're not quite tech-savvy. You'll simply have to choose the hostname (domain or subdomain), the exact folder that must be protected (the primary folder or a subfolder) as well as the login name and password. The protection will take effect instantly, so if you make an effort to open the password-protected URL within your browser, you'll have to input the newly created login credentials before you proceed. You'll also be able to give different usernames for the same folder to a number of people, so you'll not need to share the same login credentials with anyone. Each password-protected folder will have a tiny padlock icon within the File Manager section, so you shall be able to recognize this type of folders easily.
